The mayor of Calais has criticised Britain's enormous state handouts to asylum seekers and says she is so disgusted with the British Government she refuses to have any meetings with their representatives now. She blames the UK for imposing migrants on her town and she says it's costing the local economy millions. The report says that Mrs Bouchard (the mayor) says asylum seekers have to wait at least 6 months to claim asylum and benefits in France but because Britain will house, feed, clothe and school them immediately, they prefer not to wait. Sir Andrew Green, chairman of MigrationWatch UK, said: ‘Gallic logic has reached the inescapable conclusion that Britain is a soft touch for asylum seekers. ‘You only have to say the word asylum and you have an 80 per cent chance of staying in Britain, more often than not illegally.’
Phil Woolas and Labour continually make empty promises of controlling immigration for fear of the electorate joining the BNP, but these are all empty promises and immigration continues to damage the British economy and is damaging race relations between existing migrants and the indigenous population.
The Telegraph has found that failed asylum seekers are winning the right to stay in Britain because of "shambolic" failings in the immigration hearing system. Hundreds of appeal hearings are going ahead without a representative from the Home Office to defend its original decision to deny asylum. Immigration lawyers admitted that the situation is helping their clients to win cases they might otherwise have lost. The disclosure could help explain why the percentage of asylum seekers winning their appeals has risen from 17 per cent in 2005 to 25 per cent for the third quarter of 2008.
A recent study carried out by Migrationwatch UK says "There is mounting evidence that immigration has had a negative effect on wages at the lower end of the UK labour market. There is also developing evidence of a negative impact on the employment of the UK born workers. ‘The body of evidence on this subject is growing and seems to point in one direction, The first quarter of 2005 and the last quarter of 2008 the number of UK born, aged 16 and over, in employment fell by about 230,000 while the foreign born increased by nearly one million. Thus the large scale immigration of recent years has clearly done nothing to help the low paid and it may very well be affecting their chances of employment.
There are now worrying signs that UK born employment is falling while that of foreign born is rising. In the most recent 12 months to October-December 2008 employment of UK born workers fell by 278,000 (1.1%) while employment of non-UK born workers rose by 214,000 (6.0%). Analysis by nationality gives an even stronger effect; it shows a fall in employment of UK nationals by 234,000 (0.9%) and a rise in employment of non-UK nationals of 175,000 (7.9%). ‘Immigration on this scale during a period of severe recession could turn out to have a significant impact on the employment of UK natives or nationals,
Raedwald adds another chapter to this spiraling problem, “the Chancellor is set to announce a big rise in social housebuilding. Labour's social housing completions have barely matched all the economic migrants they offer to house. The effects of immigration may not be apparent to MPs as they enjoy their twenty weeks holidays a year, split no doubt between their second and third homes and sun-soaked 'factfinding trips', but the impacts are in the faces of British people every day. Is it any wonder that Labour fear a desertion to the BNP by their traditional voters?”
In response, Mr Woolas said: ‘The illegal migrants in Calais are not queueing to get into Britain – they have been locked out by one of the toughest border crossings in the world. These successful controls have been possible thanks to the close co-operation of the French government.

EU Vice-President Jacques Barrot says Britain has a duty to “share the burden” of illegal migrants and must play its part in a “European plan for resettlement of refugees within the EU”. However, last night the plan was condemned as “absurd”.
Apparently, Mr Barrot has discussed his plan with Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and hopes to have the system in operation by next year.
Sir Andrew Green, of MigrationWatchUK, said: “To allow claims from people who have not even got into Britain would turn Calais into a honeypot for bogus asylum seekers.” And UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: “Mr Barrot is rewriting the international rules to suit the French and stuff the British.”
In a copse a few minutes from a historic English cathedral city is a squalid makeshift camp. Clothes and blankets hang in trees, and the ground is strewn with discarded lavatory paper and the detritus of daily life. Living here, under canvas and plastic sheets, are more than a dozen homeless migrants, mainly Lithuanians and Slovakians.
Some claim they are unable to return to their home country because their passports were taken from them by “fixers” who secured them short-term work when they arrived here last summer. Others are said to be staying in Britain because they are wanted by the police in their homeland. Yet, despite the third world conditions, many said they choose to stay because they are better off here than in their native countries.
Many of those at the camp are hanging on for the fruit-picking season to begin. East Anglia has long been a magnet for migrants seeking agricultural work. However, their presence here, especially now that jobs are scarce, has incensed many local residents. “We have enough unemployment.” said Mr Jackson.
“We already have 6,000 people claiming Job Seekers Allowance, and 9,000 on housing lists out of a population of 153,000. “We just cannot sustain all these Eastern Europeans.
